Do I Need a Website for My Small Business?

If you’re starting a small business, one of the most common questions you’ll probably ask yourself is: “Do I actually need a website?”
And honestly? I understand why people ask.
When you’re first starting out, there’s already so much to think about:
social media
branding
pricing
finding clients
admin
content
marketing
So it’s easy for a website to become something you put off until “later”.
But from my experience working with small businesses, I genuinely think having a website - even a simple one - goes a long way.
And no, I don’t think it needs to be a huge, complicated website, nor does it have to cost you thousands of pounds either.
A Small Website Is Better Than No Website
One thing I always say is: your website does not need to be loads of pages to be valuable.
Even a simple 1–3 page website can:
make your business look more professional
build trust
help people understand what you do
showcase your work
and make it easier for potential customers to contact you.
There are really two sides to having a website as a small business.
The first is credibility.
Being able to share a website, add it to your business card, include it in your Instagram bio or send it to someone after a conversation instantly gives your business a level of professionalism.
If you meet someone in person and tell them what you do, their response is usually:
“Oh amazing, what’s your website? I’ll check it out.”
People naturally expect businesses to have one.
If You Want to Grow, a Website Becomes Non-Negotiable
The second side is visibility. If you are a business looking for:
new clients
customers
bookings
or users
then having a website becomes incredibly important.
Because if you don’t have a website, you are essentially invisible online.
Word of mouth is powerful, but for most businesses, it will only take you so far.
One of the most common things I hear is:
“We already have enough clients from referrals.”
And while that may be true right now, a website helps open the door to opportunities outside of your immediate network.
Many small businesses think:
“I’ll invest in a website once I grow a bit more.”
But actually, having a website is often one of the things that helps you grow in the first place.

Isn’t Social Media Enough?
For some people, social media alone can work.
Content creators, artists, influencers, even some local restaurants and referral-based businesses may be able to rely heavily on platforms like Instagram or TikTok.
But for most small businesses, social media has limitations.
Beyond just “having an online presence”, a website gives you control over how your business is presented. Social media is limited - you’re restricted to a profile layout, short captions, and constantly fighting algorithms. A website gives you a space that is fully yours, where you can properly explain what you do, showcase your work, answer questions, build trust and guide potential clients towards getting in touch.
Social media can introduce people to your business.
A website is often what convinces them.
What Makes a Good Small Business Website?
A good website is not just about making something “look nice”.
The most effective small business websites are:
clear
easy to navigate
mobile responsive
trustworthy
and strategically structured.
Things like:
testimonials
previous client work
company logos
clear service descriptions
FAQs
and even a personal story
all help build trust and credibility.
SEO structure is also incredibly important.
Many people underestimate how much strategy goes into helping a website rank on Google at all. Things like keyword structure, page hierarchy and mobile performance make a huge difference.
A website that simply exists is very different from a website that actively helps grow a business.
A Real Example of Why Websites Matter
I worked with a client who had been putting off getting a website because she thought she needed to build it herself to save money.
Eventually, she decided to invest in one instead.
Once the website launched, she started reaching out to potential clients directly to market her services. One of the people she contacted specifically replied saying they loved her website.
And honestly, I think that website played a huge role in building trust.
It allowed the potential client to:
see real photos of her working
read testimonials
view company logos of brands she’d worked with
and properly understand her experience and professionalism.
Without the website, I genuinely don’t think that lead would have responded in the same way.
The website became proof.
And beyond that, outsourcing the website also took a huge task off her hands, allowing her to focus on the parts of the business she already knew how to do well.
So… Do You Need a Website for Your Small Business?
In my opinion: if you want to grow your business, then yes - I would highly recommend having a website.
But that doesn’t mean you need:
a huge site
dozens of pages
expensive custom features
or something overly complicated.
Starting small is completely fine.
You can grow your website as your business grows.
As your business grows, your website should grow with you. You’ll naturally gain more experience, more projects, more testimonials and more things to talk about - and all of that content helps strengthen your online presence. From an SEO perspective, it also gives your website more opportunities to rank for multiple keywords and attract new people through Google over time.
Regularly updating your website is also becoming increasingly important for AI search tools and large language models (LLMs). Keeping your site active with fresh content, updated services, recent projects and testimonials helps signal that your business is current, active and relevant - which can improve the chances of your business being surfaced or recommended by AI-powered search experiences in the future.
The important thing is simply having a professional, trustworthy space online that helps people:
find you
understand you
trust you
and contact you.
Because in today’s world, your website is often your first impression.
